Anaesthesiology

The first general anaesthesia was given a hundred and fifty years ago. This is one of the youngest specialities of medicine now diversified in to newer branches like Intensive Care, pain relief, and emergency medical management.

The Department of Anaesthesiology is managed by Anaesthesiologist / Anaesthetist (a medical doctor who is a postgraduate in this field). NMC has well trained and qualified Senior Consultant Anaesthesiologists. They are assisted by Associate Consultants, Registrars, Operating Department Assistants (technicians), and recovery room nurses. Well-trained staff and availability of latest technology makes this as one of the safest places to get an anaesthesia.

Besides providing anaesthetic services to all types of surgeries/procedures, the department also provides resuscitation and ambulance services for transferring sick patients from other hospitals / cities. The department also provides intensive care services (e.g. putting lines to monitor vital organ function, nutritional and respiratory care) to the patients admitted in critical care units.

This department caters, in addition to eight operation theatres, places like Gamma Knife, MRI, Catheterization lab, DSA and Renal Transplant Unit. There is an acute pain service team, to take care of immediate post operative pain. The department of anaesthesia is fully equipped and can handle any kind of high-risk patients with sufficient confidence.
